The landmark I wanted to highlight for this poster was the Winchester Mystery House, since I was interested by its haunted history, the many stained glass windows, and nonsensical architecture.
process
I began with sketching poster compositions, but found that it worked better to build the elements off each other in an organic fashion, which funnily enough is how the Winchester house itself was built.
I also wanted to stylize the elements I illustrated to look like stained glass since that’s a key feature of the landmark.
font + color system
I worked with typefaces that felt more antique to match the feel of the landmark, and pulled the colors from the Winchester Mystery House itself.
I applied color to my illustration of the building and then used those colors for the rest of the poster elements as well. I used varieties of each hue to create a stained glass effect.
